Safety & Regulation
Safety is the foundation of all Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) planning in Utah. While AAM introduces new aviation technologies, the aircraft, pilots, and operations will be regulated under the same rigorous safety standards that govern today’s aviation system.
In the United States, aviation safety is overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which certifies aircraft, regulates operations, and manages the national airspace. Utah works closely with federal partners, local governments, and industry leaders to ensure that new AAM technologies are introduced safely, responsibly, and transparently.
Before any aircraft can operate commercially or carry passengers, it must undergo extensive testing and certification to meet strict federal safety requirements.
FAA Oversight & Certification
All Advanced Air Mobility aircraft must be certified by the Federal Aviation Administration before they can enter commercial service.
FAA certification evaluates every aspect of an aircraft’s design, safety systems, maintenance procedures, and operational performance. This process is rigorous and often takes many years to complete, ensuring that aircraft meet the highest safety standards before carrying passengers or cargo.
In addition to aircraft certification, pilots must be trained and licensed, operators must meet operational safety standards, and maintenance programs must meet federal aviation requirements. Several electric aircraft manufacturers are currently progressing through the FAA certification process, with the first aircraft expected to receive certification later this decade.
State Coordination
While the FAA regulates aviation safety at the federal level, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) plays an important role in preparing the state for the safe integration of Advanced Air Mobility.
UDOT works with federal agencies, local governments, and industry partners to plan infrastructure, evaluate operational impacts, and support responsible deployment of new aviation technologies. This includes:
- Coordinating infrastructure planning for future vertiports and aviation facilities
- Supporting safe integration with existing transportation systems
- Working with communities and local governments on planning and land-use considerations
- Ensuring public engagement and transparency as technologies evolve
By planning early and working collaboratively, Utah is preparing to introduce AAM technologies in a way that prioritizes safety and public trust.
