Advanced Air Mobility
Transportation is evolving—and Utah is preparing for what comes next.
A New Era of Aviation
Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) is an innovative concept designed to improve air transportation through the use of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. AAM incorporates cutting-edge aviation technologies that promise to transform transportation by offering more efficient, safer, and cost-effective methods for moving both people and goods.
Led by UDOTs Division of Aeronautics (DOA), and working closely with public, private, and academic partners to develop, test, and deploy the technology needed to safely fly and operate this new means of aviation. As Utah continues to grow, AAM can help connect communities, strengthen the economy, and support faster emergency response—while reducing congestion and improving mobility across the state.
AAM will not replace existing transportation systems. Instead, it adds new options that complement roads, rail, and traditional aviation, helping Utah move people and goods more safely, sustainably, and reliably. As Utah continues to grow, Advanced Air Mobility can help connect communities, strengthen the economy, and support faster emergency response while improving regional mobility across the state.
What is Advanced Air Mobility?
Advanced Air Mobility refers to a new class of aircraft—including electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles—designed to travel shorter distances using electric or hybrid-electric propulsion systems.
These aircraft can take off and land vertically like helicopters but operate more quietly and efficiently. They are designed to integrate into existing aviation systems while supporting new types of transportation services.
AAM technologies are already being tested across the United States, and Utah is preparing now to ensure these innovations are implemented safely, responsibly, and in ways that benefit communities statewide

Air Mobility in Action
AAM technologies are already being tested across the United States, and Utah is preparing now to ensure these innovations are implemented safely, responsibly, and in ways that benefit communities statewide.

Why Utah?
Utah is uniquely positioned to lead in Advanced Air Mobility. The state’s rapidly growing population, strong aerospace industry, and unique geography create opportunities for innovative transportation solutions.

UDOT's Role
UDOT plays an important coordinating role in preparing the state for AAM by working with federal partners, local governments, industry leaders, and the community to help ensure that AAM can be introduced safely and effectively.
