Why Utah?

Utah is uniquely positioned to lead the development and integration of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). With a rapidly growing population, diverse geography, and a strong foundation in transportation innovation, Utah offers an ideal environment to explore how AAM can safely and effectively connect communities across the state.

Utah continues to be one of the fastest-growing states in the nation, with expanding communities, increasing travel demand, and evolving infrastructure needs. As the state grows, transportation systems must keep pace—addressing congestion along major corridors while supporting the efficient movement of people and goods. Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) offers an opportunity to plan ahead by introducing new transportation options that complement existing systems and help maintain Utah’s high quality of life

A State Designed for Connectivity

Utah is one of the most urbanized states in the country, with a majority of its population concentrated along the Wasatch Front. At the same time, vast rural regions and natural geographic features—such as mountains, valleys, and deserts—can make travel between communities time-consuming. AAM has the potential to:

  • Improve connectivity between urban and rural areas
  • Provide more efficient travel options across challenging terrain
  • Support regional mobility where traditional options are limited

This combination of density and distance makes Utah a strong candidate for early AAM applications.

Utah’s Approach

Utah is taking a proactive, coordinated, and safety-first approach to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). Rather than waiting for technologies to mature elsewhere, the state is actively planning for how AAM can be integrated into Utah’s transportation system in a way that is safe, practical, and aligned with community needs.

The Utah Department of Transportation plays a central role in this effort, focusing on planning, coordination, and public engagement—not operating aircraft. This includes working closely with federal partners, local governments, and industry leaders to ensure AAM is implemented responsibly.

Utah’s approach focuses on several key priorities:

Planning for long-term integration by identifying where AAM can support existing transportation systems

Prioritizing safety and regulatory alignment through coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

Leveraging existing infrastructure, including airports and transportation corridors

Engaging communities early and often to ensure transparency and public input

Supporting innovation and economic development while maintaining quality of life
Coordinating across state, local, and industry partners to ensure a unified and effective approach to AAM implementation
